Guatemala
Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America. Its borders border to the north and west with Mexico, to the east with Belize and Honduras and to the south with El Salvador.
Today, Guatemala is known as the heart of the Mayan world where the indigenous people of this ethnic group make up 51% of the population. With 25 sociolinguistic groups it is a country of great human diversity.
It has recognized Patrimonies of Humanity such as Tikal, the city of Antigua (in origin Santiago de los caballeros) the ruins of Quirigá. It also has recognized the Intangible Heritage for the Garifuna language, dance and music, of the ethnicity of the same name that lives on the Atlantic coast.
It is the world’s largest exporter of cardamom, the fifth largest exporter of sugar and the seventh largest producer of coffee.
There are 14,704 Spaniards residing in Guatemala (as of January 1, 2026).
