The Minimum Vital Income (IMV) has reached more than one million households (1,010,565) since its launch in June 2020, in the midst of the Covid pandemic. The number of protected beneficiaries has since exceeded 3 million people (3,008,318), of whom 1.3 million are children and adolescents, 43.4% of the total.

Since the entry into force of this policy, Social Security has allocated 14,938.9 million euros to pay the payroll for this benefit.

“The IMV was designed as a policy aimed at preventing the risk of poverty and social exclusion of people who live alone or are integrated into a coexistence unit and lack basic economic resources,” explains Minister Elma Saiz. “We have to keep working, but having helped 3 million people, more than a third of whom are minors, is a big step.”

April Payroll

The Minimum Vital Income payroll in April reached 719,543 households in which 2,194,586 people live, according to the latest statistics published by the National Social Security Institute (INSS). The average amount of the benefit is 505.4 euros per month per household and, overall, this month’s payroll has amounted to 404 million euros.

In April, there are 129,595 more active benefits than there were a year ago in this same period, which means an increase of 22%. These households are home to 423,106 beneficiaries more than those registered in the same month of 2024 (+23.9%).

Both by the profile of the holders and the beneficiaries, we can say that the Minimum Vital Income has a marked female profile. In April, 67.6% of the headlines (486,327) and 53.4% of the beneficiaries are women, specifically, 1,172,606.

Childhood and IMV

One of the main objectives of the Minimum Vital Income is to combat child poverty, and in this regard it should be noted that 41.3% of the beneficiaries are children and adolescents, 905,371. “We must all stand united against child poverty. Working with them, bringing stability to their lives through minimal resources is betting on the future of all,” said Elma Saiz.
In April, in more than two-thirds of the households covered by the IMV, minors coexist, specifically 68.8%. In total, there are 495,003 households with minors among which there are 123,974 single parents.

One of the main tools to combat the risk of child poverty is the complement of aid for children, which is part of the Minimum Vital Income. This month, the IMV with this add-on has reached 498,899 units of coexistence. This form of IMV involves an aid of 115 euros per household per month in the case of children from 0 to 3 years; 80.5 euros per month for each child between 3 and 6 years; and 57.5 euros per month for each child between 6 and 18 years. The average amount of the supplement in April was 67.04 euros per child and 123.11 euros per household with children.
