Since joining the European Union, Ireland has gone from being a pre-dominantly agrarian society to standing out for its economic and technological advances.
The interior of the country consists mostly of lowlands devoted to agriculture or occupied by large swampy areas and lakes, interrupted only occasionally by hills. The west of the country is characterized by its coastal mountains. Almost a third of the population lives in Dublin.
Ireland has seen the birth of great English-language writers such as Yeats, Joyce, Beckett, Wilde and Shaw.
